Quick Tips to Keep Your Rugs Clean and Like New

When it comes to rugs, San Diego residents will find that having them in their home comes with a number of benefits. They offer protection, make floors more comfortable and they add a great style and aesthetic to any room. However, you want to make sure that your rugs continue to look great no matter how much use and traffic they see. There are some tips that you can use to make sure that your rugs are always clean and maintained.

Grab Your Tools and Prepare

There are several tools that you will want to make sure that you are able to sufficiently clean your rug, including:

  • Vacuum
  • Rug shampoo
  • Sponge
  • Squeegee
  • Water
  • Rubber gloves to protect your hands
  • Bucket
  • Soft bristled brush

The first step is using your vacuum to pick up all of the loose debris from your rug so that it is ready for cleaning.

Wash Your Rug

You will use your brush or sponge to make sure that your rug is clean. The rug soap is also a part of this process. Work it into a lather and make sure that you are paying special attention to any areas that might have some stains. You should allow the rug cleaner to sit on the rug for 15 to 30 minutes so that it is able to penetrate the fibers and lift any dirt that might be present.

Rinse Your Rug

If the weather is decent, you might want to just take your rug outside and use your water hose to rinse it since this will be the easiest way. If this is not an option, consider rinsing in your tub or shower if your rug is small enough. This will simply speed up the process and ensure a more thorough rinsing.

Remove the Excess Water and Dry Your Rug

Use your squeegee to get the excess water from your rug and then lay it out flat so that it is able to dry. Drying it in the sunlight is one of the best options since it works the fastest.

Loosen the Fibers

Once your rug is dry, go over it once more with your vacuum. This will make sure that the fibers are loose so your rug has a nice, plush appearance.

Use this information to make sure that your rugs in San Diego are always ready to be shown off. You should create a cleaning schedule so that it is easy to keep up with them. Ideally, once a week is good, but if a rug is not in a high-traffic area, you can get away with cleaning it about once a month.
