SPOT THE DIFFERENCE!!

  • Amir Ghods
While buying a rug you might find it difficult to choose your desired option. Sometimes it is difficult to spot the difference between the different type of Rugs. Being surrounded by fraudulent dealers in the market, either you should learn to find the difference on your own or find yourself a trustworthy and reputable rug shop. So basically, What is the difference between handwoven, hand knotted, hand tufted and machine made rugs?

HAND KNOTTED RUGS
Hand knotted rugs are made on a specially designed loom and are knotted by hand. They are one-of-a-kind rug that is woven completely by hand. The making of these rugs deserves alot of admiration. Knots are inserted into the foundation and are tied by the rug weaver.

HAND TUFTED RUGS
A hand-tufted rug is created by a weaver and not on a weaving or looming machine. It is made by punching strands of wool into a canvas that is stretched on a frame with the help of a hand-operated tool. It This does not require the similar level of skill that hand-knotting does.

MACHINE MADE RUGS
Machine made rugs are made by large machines called power looms. The only difference between a handmade rug and a machine made rug is that it lacks the personal and soulful touch found in a Handmade rug. These rugs are manufactured quickly using synthetic fibres like polyester, polypropylene, viscose, cotton and wool.

HANDLOOM RUGS
Handloom rugs are unique in look and touch. They suit every parameter of design, color and pattern to add considerable value to the homes and interiors.

Hereby, Home Decor Fine Rugs want to unpack some of the differences for you to assist you in making the best choice.

•YOU MAY NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER, BUT YOU CAN JUDGE A RUG BY IT'S BACK.

Machine made rug- On flipping a machine made rug you will be encountered with regularity and uniformity. You will find a more even and balanced look at the back. A more detailed look and design will ensure you with better quality of the rug.

-Backing of Latex and linen can even tell you about the type of rug but it may sometimes confuse you if you're an untrained eye. Some handwoven rugs may have a backing to hold the weaves in place while some machine made rugs may also have a latex or linen backing.

Hand knotted rugs- The knots and the weaving in hand knotted rugs are slightly asymmetrical. They are not uniform or balanced. The knots may differ in size as well. Some are large while some are smaller in size.

Handmade rugs- More of the design and the pattern is visible from the back of a Handmade rug. If you can see more visible pattern and design at the back, be more confident that you're looking at the back of a Handmade rug.

•DONT SPARE THE EDGES!

A thorough look at the edges can also be used to distinguish between the rugs because different weaving regions follow different ways of finishing them. The edges of a Handmade rug are done by hand whereas machine is used to stich the edges of machine made rug. The use of machine therefore gives a more undeviating and even look to the edges.

•LOOK AT THE BORDER TO REVEAL THE SECRETS.

The border or fringe on a rug helps to determine its type as well. On a machine made rug, the fringe is usually sewn at the end to give it a final touch. The fringes help to give them a handmade-rug look upto a great extent. While the fringes of Hand-made rugs are made from the warp threads of handmade rugs. These are an extension of the carpet’s warp and are not be sewn onto the carpet later on.

•THE SHAPE ALSO MATTERS

Machine made carpets, as the name suggests are more exact and accurate. They are precise in shape. While in handmade rugs, a slight variation can always be noticed owing to the fact that everything is done by hand only.
