WHY ARE THE RUGS SO EXPENSIVE?

WHY ARE THE RUGS SO EXPENSIVE?

  • Amir Ghods
Have you ever wondered why these rugs are so expensive? What are the reasons behind them being so expensive? This question is one of the major that might have crossed your mind while buying rugs. We are sometimes unable to understand what reasons lie behind the high price of rugs available in the market. Thus, at Home décor rugs, we've made an attempt to compile all the factors and the reasons which makes your rug expensive. These reasons will ultimately help you to figure out how to choose a rug for your space.
THE METHOD USED TO MAKE THE RUG
The weave put painstaking efforts to make a handmade rug. We are all aware that anything that is handmade has intricate detailing, it requires human expertise, effort, time, cost and uniqueness. Thus, all these factors make them cost more than the machine made products.
By the same token, handmade or hand knotted rugs in which each knot is weaved individually become expensive. Hand-knotted rugs are also much more durable and comparatively last longer than the machine-made rugs. So, when looking at expensive area rugs and trying to figure out the reason - Ask how the rug was made and how much effort went into it.
THE MATERIAL USED IN THE MAKING OF THE RUG
Rugs are most commonly made of either natural fibers—like wool, cotton, or silk—or synthetic materials, like nylon or polyester. Rugs made of natural fiber are generally more expensive, as natural fibers can be produced in a limit.
Also, the material used to make a rug determines the quality of the rug. Different materials have different durability, longevity, ease of cleaning, look and feel. Thus, materials that are more durable, feel more comfortable as well as that are easier to clean and maintain becomes more expensive.
THE KNOT DENSITY
How much a rug costs you is highly dependent on the quality of the rug and the time that went into weaving it. The higher the knot density, the more the time that goes into making the rug, and consequently, the higher the price will be.
THE COLORS, PATTERN AND DESIGN
Rugs come in different design and patterns. The colors used can also be naturally or artificially dyed. Thus, the rarity of the design and the colors used are some important determiners of why are rugs so expensive.
Therefore, if the design of the rug is more intricate and includes more detailed and the colors used are naturally dyed - the rug will be comparatively more expensive.
KNOW WHO IS WEAVING YOUR RUG?
Before you purchase a rug, consider doing a bit of research on its production methods. Rugs made in high-scale factories that employ child labor and labor at extremely low wages will obviously sell at much cheaper prices, while the rugs made in production centers where the weavers are provided fair remuneration sell the same rugs at an expensive price.
THE ANTIQUITY OF THE RUGS
Some rugs are truly antique which last for decades and can be passed down as a family heirloom. When cared for properly can be even resold later and much of the original value can be retained. Thus, rugs that are antique and stay in greater value over time are more expensive than the ones who do not last longer.
THE SIZE OF THE RUG
It's quite simple - the larger the rug, the higher the price. That’s because rugs are priced by the square foot or square meter. Therefore, larger rugs will be more expensive.
THE COUNTRY FROM WHERE YOUR RUG BELONG
Labor costs and the skill of the workers varies in different countries, and thus there is a difference in how much rugs cost for the consumer. Rugs in countries where they are hand-knotted cost more in comparison to countries where rugs are power loomed.
